- A
1991 study by the U.S. Justice Department
found that children who suffer abuse or neglect are 53% more likely to
become juvenile delinquents, 38% more likely to be arrested as adults,
and 38% more likely to become violent criminals.
- The
U.S. Justice Department recognizes CASA
as a model juvenile delinquency program. When CASA's involvement
in a neglect case prevents placement in foster care and later juvenile
delinquency, they estimate the investment in CASA for that one child
will have paid off 40 times over.
- U.S.
Justice Department also estimates that
if a child must go into State custody, and CASA is appointed on the
case, the time spent in the system is reduced 50%. Our CASA
program's cost per child served in 2002/2003 was $360; a neglected
child placed in foster care costs Tennessee taxpayers $18,000 annually
and $43,000 annually if that child becomes a juvenile delinquent in the
custody of the State.
- CASA is a proven cost-effective prevention
service.
