Habitat Homes Last

The village of Verapaz was hit with a second earthquake February 2001.  More than 95% of the homes were leveled.  Only 20 out of 550 homes are still habitable.  Amazingly all 13 of the Habitat for Humanity homes are still standing.  While they are simple structures of 2-3 rooms with a total of 425 sq ft. they are built to withstand a earthquake.  Millard Fuller says he is not surprised the homes are standing.  A habitat home has three advantages:

1) First all homes need a solid foundation and Habitat homes are built on the most solid of foundations, the Bible!

2) Second it is not just cement and sand in the mortar joints, there is love and sweat form the many volunteers and homeowners who pour themselves into a home.

3) The third reason is that homes are built by people like you and I, people who do not know how to build so shortcuts are never taken.  It may call for one nail but we will put in 4.

While difficult to see there is a vertical piece of #3 rebar in each block and there is horizontal rebar as well.  We did not have a chance to see a completed house as we started with all 13 houses having about 3 layers of block and by the end of the week most homes were ready for a roof.  At the time they were building 375sqft 2 room houses or 450sqft 3 room houses.
