As most infantry
soldiers know the REMFs would ask us to do some strange
things. The article below is about what the REMFs ask us to do on
Christmas Eve 1968. We had a ground attack on our base camp
December 13 and found just one enemy body the next morning. The
REMFs hated to think the body count was that low. So when these
graves were found they wanted them dug up to see how they died.
When we dug the graves we found that some were NVA. The REMFs
wanted us to take the uniforms off of the corpses to prove to
the rear echelon that they were NVA. The bodies were wrapped
in straw mats. When they were taken out of the graves we had to
unwrap them to see how they died. If you have ever seen people
killed from war wounds it is not a pretty site. Sometimes things
are missing. We had been supplied with gas masks to help with the
smell. But I still find it hard to believe the REMFs ask us to do
this. I got sick from the smell and refused to dig up any more
bodies.
What a Christmas Eve!!
