    TIP: Discover more discount, coupons, and freebies from other dog food manufacturers. Do not necessarily get an expensive brand like Solid Gold;
it has too much protein and will cause weight gain. Nutro does make a new line of no doubt more expensive kibble called Max. Stick with kibble whose first ingredients listed  are Lamb and Rice. This will prevent allergies and have the right amount of protein.

Plan That All Important First Visit
Before You Pick up the Puppy

  • Consult a local veterinarian, veterinarian assistant, and well researched people who own Scotties themselves and have bred Scotties in a manner consistent with your own dog breeding requirements. Note: areas should have a counterpart of the below Veterinarian Medical Association. Always take your puppy to a vet who is very knowledgeable regarding Scotties within 72 hours after receipt for a full physical and health workup. Make the appointment PRIOR to picking up your puppy.

Now is the hour to catch defects, clear up ear infections, spot heart problems, get those nails trimmed, and update the vets records of shots and medications given by the breeder thus far. You will be receiving shot, worming, and physical records.

Note: Some of the above may advocate Clicker Training. I do not. Rather it is more important to get a good trainer that employs positive reinforcement and gentle correction. Scotties do best in classes where they can observe and choose to do the skill on their own. Forcing a Scottie to do any training task is a frustrating and counterproductive trial and tribulations. Rather go through Puppy School and Obedience Classes. You may even go on to compete in EarthDog or Agility with your Scots. Ask your veterinarian for trainer contact information.

I think clicker training is rather silly as our Scots do best in Obedience classes that have a mixture of positive reinforcement <luckily they are "food motivated" and very gentle corrections.
Our Scots move far too fast to coordinate the click for the proper timing.

Get them a German Stainless Steel prong collar to be used only on walks and training class. Prong collars are safer than choker chains. Expect your Scottie to be the star of class.

They are curious and observant. All it takes is for them to watch a demonstration and they will immediately perform the skill. They have the attitude "oh yeah, just watch me!" AVOID the temptation of using a loud voice on a Scottie. Despite their spirits they can get their feelings hurt easily. They will get their temperament effected in a negative manner. PATIENCE! Let the Scottie do something right and immediately reward them with treats. Forcing a Scottie to do a skill is useless. It has to be their idea!

Puppy Socialization & Habituation - Association of Pet Behavior Counselors

"...Mostly directed toward breeders ...lots of references to studies.
Instead of socialisation and habituation being a haphazard affair with experiences occurring at random,as is so often the case, a puppy's exposure to environmental stimuli should be as systematic as possible to ensure the best chance of it developing a sound temperament and capacity to cope in all circumstances. A lot of responsibility lies with the breeder. Of course, it is the breeder who selects the genetic make-up..."

Pregnancy Determination in the Bitch, Puppy Welping, and The First Weeks

Pregnancy Determination in the Bitch

Jeanette L. Floss, DVM, MS
College of Veterinary Medicine

Females of most domestic species are sexually receptive (in heat or estrus) every 17 to 21 days. Failure to return to estrus after a successful breeding is often the earliest indication of pregnancy in these animals. In the bitch, the average interval between periods of estrus is seven months, regardless of whether she becomes pregnant. Therefore, non-return to estrus is not a reliable indicator of pregnancy in the canine. Palpation and radiographic or ultrasonographic imaging of the abdomen are the most common methods of detecting pregnancy in the bitch.

Teaching Your New Dog to Settle
From Terry B. in Williamsburg VA

"...We acquired a new puppy just before the holidays when a neighbor's dog had a litter. Mom is a hound/beagle mix, and we're not certain what dad was. Mom is a sweet natured dog, however, and we have every reason to believe that little Howard will be as well. But right now he's a little terror, running all over the place, chasing the cats, and just being a little bundle of energy. The kids love it, but I'd like to see him calm down, if only to give me a few minutes of peace and quiet every day. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
