The Foundation
The foundation to designing and developing any course or training program is the Instructional Systems Design (ISD) model. As an instructional designer, I follow the ISD model whether I am designing web-based training, computer-based training, or traditional instructor-led training.

The key is to collaborate with the students and subject matter experts when following the ISD model. That way, you know your training is learner-centered. It's not important what I, as an instructional designer want in the program. It's what's important to the learner.

The ISD model is made up of the following five phases. Click on each phase to see its steps. The steps listed for each phase are generic. Depending on the delivery method you chose (such as CBT), there will be more steps specific for that delivery method.

As you can see from the model, evaluation is more than just the fifth and final phase. Evaluation is conducted after each phase of the ISD model.
