You're Johnny come lately

Been a little while since I last posted… I guess I'm just going' through the 'ole life adjustment thing. I knew it had been a while since I last worked, but it really hits you when you are getting used to doing it again.

So, how IS it going? Well, it's going great. But it is a little strange being the 'new guy'. It isn't the most comfortable thing in the world. Now before you start to think I am all out of sorts like A-Rod in the Red Sox clubhouse, it's not that bad. I can't really explain except to say, you don't expect to be starting over somewhere for the 4th time in a little over 10 years. We had a department meeting yesterday and they recognized a couple of folks for their 30th year of service to the organization. Wow! I hope I can hang around there for 30 years. My generation and those younger than mine have just assumed those types of jobs will never be around for us. I hope I am wrong, but even A-rod is on his third team already...

I am on a Worship Leader list that is sponsored by WorshipTogether.com. The list has exploded the last few days talking about the song Puff the Magic Dragon. Someone happened to mention it and then someone came behind and said, "Hey, did you know that song is about smoking weed?" Then all those who had never heard that and loved the song were crushed. Then someone comes along and posts that Peter, Paul and Mary were indeed singing about innocence lost and posted a link from snopes.com to prove it. Then they got onto Hotel California and how it was about devil worship. Pfft. Anyone with a brain and ears to listen to what Don Henley had to say about it knows that is not true. Well, this all went on and this lady from a church in good ole Johnson City pipes in and says, "So you mean a lot of those songs they talked about at the rock music seminars our youth pastors drug us all to weren't that bad after all?" Lemme tell ya, it's a good thing that wasn't my youth pastor. I do believe have to be careful to what we listen to. And if we know something bad about a group, then we shouldn't let others be misled. But these seminars she was talking about just burn me up. Our little corner of the world is famous for them too. I've watched preacher after preacher on channel 8 rail against all music that isn't gospel. Yes, I said all. They even imply that artists like Michael W. Smith are devil worshippers. Are you kidding me? There are complete websites devoted to this drivel. Ya know, I'm going to stop before I say something I shouldn't. I know A-rod would keep running his trap, but I won't.

So, why all the refs to A-rod you are asking? I really don't know. If you figure it out, post a comment. And the answer, 'you have a man crush on him' will not be accepted.

  • Not picking on preachers really. It's more of a channel 8 thing with me. :)
