"Sailing Away on TVA:" Learning to Sail in Upper East Tennessee

"Sailing Away on TVA" might seem like a somewhat ridiculous statement and Upper East
Tennessee might seem like a strange place to learn how to sail. However, there are a lot of
opportunities if you just look around and many nice TVA lakes to explore. I have listed
just a few of them below:

Watauga Lake Sailing Club (WLSC)

This is a local sailing club that sponsors several events including sailboat races, dock parties,
dinner meetings, etc.  The links for the WLSC main web page and the WLSC Picture Gallery
contain information on events.  Additional pictures are also shown below:

Eastman Sailing Club

This sailing club is for employees and families of Eastman Chemical Company. The club
sponsors sailing classes, local day sails on Watauga Lake, and charter trips to Chesapeake
Bay, The Outer Banks, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and other locations.

Sailing Lessons, Classes, Self Study

-Go to a sailing school such as the Annapolis Sailing School
-Take private lessons in docking at the Lake Lanier Sailing Academy (near Atlanta, Ga.)
of sailing or some other sailing school. Docking is one of the harder things to learn and you
a few hours of "one on one" training can work wonders for your confidence.
-Read the "The Annapolis Book of Seamanship" over and over again. This and other excellent
videos/books are available from West Marine.
-Charter a boat with a Captain and a boat in the Caribbean with the Moorings.
-Take a United States Power Squadron Course such as the "Boat Smart" Class. You don't have
to be a member to take this class on boat safety equipment, rules of the road, safe operation
of a boat, etc. Members are offered other classes on sailing, dead reckoning, celestial navigation,
etc. Contact Clark Lucas at 423-538-4643 or mailto:acral@chartertn.net for general information.
