During the early 1960's, the SHHS boy's cross-country team was dominant under Coach "Snake" Evans. There were state champions in 1962 and state runner-ups in 1964. They won the conference from 1962-1966 and finished in the top three the remainder of the decade. Dan Clark, David Huff, and Richard Mettler were some of the great runners of the 1960's.
During the 1970's, the program was up and down and had several good runners. Mark Brown was the state individual champion in 1970. Rick Gray almost won the conference individual title in 1976/1977.
The 1980's was the Deneen decade. Walter Deneen took the state title in 1981. Other good runners were Scott Deneen, Chris Deneen, and Scotty Bowers.
The 1990's SHHS CC program has had success. The team has made it to the state seven years in a row and placed second in 1998. The 1995 team was 8th, 1996/97 teams were fourth, 1999 was sixth, 2000 was fourth and the 2001 team placed seventh. Since 1996, Science Hill has had four All-State runners - John Goodwin (1996/97), Chad Kiser(1996/98), Shane Byrne (1998/99, 2000), and Robert Hatcher (1998/99, 2000).
