Hill Finishes 3rd In State
In a race dominated by Houston High School, the Science Hill Harriers
finished 3rd with 143 points. Houston won with 30 and Oak Ridge was second
with 134. Congratulations to Houston High School, and we hope you qualify for
Nike Team Nationals, which you definitely deserve.
Science Hill was led by Todd Smalling who earned All-State honors with his 7th
place finish in a time of 15:50. Other Science Hill scorers were Eric
Schneider (16:26), Damien Buchanon (16:30), Arun Malikiyal (16.54) and Kenny
Love (16:58). All five Science Hill scorers return next season.
Science Hill Seniors who graduate this year include Ryan Alexander, Michael
Hemphill, Philip Dunham, and Bobby Moore. Ryan, Michael, and Philip have each
been All Conference and All Region runners for Science Hill, but have been
hampered with injuries this season. All these runners will be missed.
Congratulations to Elizabethton, A/AA State Champions. They worked hard and
they showed their talent at the state meet. Also, congratulations to Daniel
Boone High School (7th in state) and Davy Crockett High School (10th in State),
making Region 1 the only region to have three top 10 teams in the state. Blake
Ketron on Daniel Boone finished in 8th place with a time of 15:54 earning All
State honors.
Led by Todd Smalling's 15:53 on a hot and humid day at Daniel Boone where
several runners suffered from heat exhaustion, Science Hill captured their
seventh consecutive Region One Team Championship with a total of 39 points.
Todd's winning margin was a commanding 44 seconds over the second place finisher
J Penny (16:37) of Davy Crockett. Blake Ketron (16:39) of Daniel Boone
finished 3rd. Due to the hot and humid conditions, times were about 15 seconds
slower (on average) than the Trailblazer meet held at Boone two weeks earlier.
Todd ran the fastest time any runner under Coach Thomas has run at the Region 1
meet.
In the AAA team race, Daniel Boone was 2nd with a total of 59 and Davy Crockett
was 3rd with a total of 95. All three Washington County Teams qualify for the
State Meet. In the A/AA race, Elizabethton had an excellent performance and
University School of Johnson City also qualified for the State Meet.
Elizabethton, with an average time only 8 seconds slower than Science Hill, is
one of the favorites to win the A/AA Division at the State Meet. Good luck to
Boone, Crockett, Elizabethton and UH at the state meet.
For Science Hill, Arun Malikiyal finished 6th in 16:55.1, Eric
Schneider finished 7th in 16:55.8, Kenny Love finished 13th in 17:20,
and Ryan Alexander finished 14th in 17:24. All five scorers from
Science Hill made the All-Region team. Science Hill harriers Damien
Buchanon finished 17th in 17:36 and Michael Hemphill finished 23rd in
17:56. Both Damien and Michael were All Conference performers, but are
battling nagging injuries.
Congratulations to Coach Buddy Thomas for winning his seventh straight
Region One Championship!! Science Hill's last meet will be the Tennessee State
Meet on Nov. 6th at Steeplechase in Nashville, TN.
