September 3–6, 1998

We attended all four days of this huge media convention in Atlanta. There were over 300 guests  and nearly 20,000 attendees interested in science fiction, comics and gaming.

Babylon 5 guests included: Pat Tallman (Lyta Alexander), Peter Jurasik (Londo Mollari), Jeff Conaway (Zack Allen), Robin Atkin-Downes (Byron the teep), Wayne Alexander (Sebastian from Comes the Inquisitor and Lorien, among others), and Jeffery Willerth (the guy in the Kosh suit). Also in attendance were series conceptual consultant Harlan Ellison and B5 screenplay/novel writer Peter David.

B5 panel
Sunday featured a panel with (L to R) Jeffery Willerth, Pat Tallman, Robin Atkin-Downes, Jeff Conaway, Wayne Alexander, Peter Jurasik, and Peter David.

Kosh, Lyta, and Byron

Each of the B5 actors signed autographs on the con’s “Walk of Fame,” and almost everyone was featured in a “panel” by themselves.

Harlan Ellison
If you EVER have the opportunity to hear Harlan Ellison in person, GO!

Robin Atkin-Downes
Robin Atkin-Downes was very friendly, outgoing, and cute in person.
In other words, he’s the polar opposite of Byron the teep.

Also featured at DragonCon was the debut of Babylon Park, a five-minute B5/South Park spoof that was so much fun! Even if you’ve only seen a couple episodes of South Park, like I have, you’ll still probably love it. Download a RealVideo version at www.infinicorp.com/babylonpark.

Other notable guests we saw included Anthony Daniels (C3PO from Star Wars), Jonathan Harris (Dr. Smith from Lost in Space), and Ray Bradbury.

Prior to Saturday night’s masquerade, the Atlanta Radio Theatre Company presented Robert Heinlein’s The Man Who Traveled in Elephants, featuring Harlan Ellison and Anthony Daniels.

Anthony Daniels (in yellow shirt - how appropriate!) and Harlan Ellison (seated behind him) perform.

Afterwards, the company presented Rory Rammer, Space Marshall: The Cosmic Cycoplex, featuring Lost in Space’s Jonathan Harris (Dr. Smith) in a part written especially for him.

As we were seated far away from the stage during the masquerade, I didn't take many photos. Hopefully those will be available from the DragonCon site soon, because some of the costumes were just incredible. There were so many B5 costumes represented that the judges actually presented a certificate for “Best B5 Costume.” A couple dressed in Centauri attire won. However, the most ambitious was from the group below which featured at least one Narn, Centauri, Minbari, and Vorlon.

Anthony DanielsAnthony Daniels emceed the masquerade and did a marvelous job. While the judges left the room to make their decisions, he worked the crowd, pointing out people who were wearing interesting costumes and weren’t in the competition.

The overall winner of the masquerade was a group of about eight people dressed as characters from Xena. They did a five minute sword battle that was pretty convincing.

You never know who you’ll run into during a con...

Londo Costume
The Centauri teddy bear was anatomically correct!

Stormtroopers!
Stormtroopers take over the lobby of the Hyatt hotel.

The con hotel was the Hyatt Regency Downtown. We stayed about three blocks away in the Renaissance Hotel Downtown

View
This was the view from our 22nd story room! The con was in the Hyatt (1), the Merchandise Mart (2) and the Apparel Mart (3). It was an easy walk straight from our hotel to the Hyatt.
